(And
What it really Means to the
Auxiliary in First Southern)
|

|
Auxiliary Goals related to BoatSmart are:
- a 30% increase in the number of students in public education courses;
- a focus on education for high risk boaters (PWC, canoes, kayaks and
small open motorboats)
- a goal of 200,000 VSC's in 2001
What can you do to help achieve these goals?

Part of spreading the word about boating safety is getting
the
information out to the public regarding Vessel Safety Checks and Public
Education courses. The Division 24 website does a great job of getting
this information out. Check it out at
http://www.uscgaux.org/~01424/
Give-aways are great! In Division 15, coupons for a free ice cream cone
are given to children who are wearing PFD's. These can be used while on
patrol or at a VSC station. The coupons were provided by Stewarts Ice
Cream and Friendly's Ice Cream with help from the local assemblyman. A
discount coupon toward the purchase of a PFD is also provided for children
without PFD's. These are provided by the Northeastern NY Marine Trades
Association. On one Sunday afternoon, the coupons and visibility lead
to about 25 VSC's.

In response
to a fatal boat accident on Lake George, the Ticonderaoga
Fire Department teamed up with the Coast Guard Auxiliary (Division 15)
and the Coast Guard (Station Burlington, Vt.) to offer a Boating Safety
workshop and Vessel Safety Check Station. The two hour seminar was
attended by approximately 25 people and provided an excellent
opportunity to reinforce the basics of boating safely. Thanks to Tricia
and Gregg Trask for facilitating this event.
