COASTIE’S REPORT, 2000

Just in case you were not at the September Board on Staten Island, the Auxiliary has acquired three additional Coasties with trailers, as well as an additional trailer for our present Coastie.

These should be available to the District after the first of the year. With the trailers, a van will no longer be required to obtain Coastie. A trailer hitch will be required since Coastie will travel with all of its equipment in a 4x6 foot enclosed trailer.

The present plan is to station these Coasties around the District and I am looking for some of our Coastie Operators to assume possession of these Coasties and trailers. I would welcome any and all applications to become the proud possessor of one of these cute little boats. I will welcome even those who have not been trained (I will train them) and wish to become an Assistant Coastie Chairman.

If any of you are interested please contact me at:

Coastie’s Report to the District Board

During my recent trip to Great Britain, Coastie was able to get around the District with little or no help from me. During my absence he traveled to Flotilla 20-04 and then on to the open house at Grp/Mso LIS. The folks from Flotilla 15-09 came down and picked him up for use with some Water-n-Kids classes, which by the way were a great success, I’m told. Tom Venizio sent me some great pictures with Coastie and his classmates. Tom is attempting to get permission to publish them on our web site.

After his trip to the mountains, it was on to Flotilla 24-12 for the Memorial Day Weekend and he was held over to Thursday and Friday, June 1st and 2nd. Then it was on to the Adirondacks and the New York State Telecommunications Association. On June 4th to 6th.

His next appearance will be at OPSAIL in New London on July 11th to the 15th. After that he will be at the Coast Guard Academy on August 4th and at the Intrepid Museum on Saturday and Sunday, August 5th and 6th. Come out and join him and his friends.

Coastie has many open dates and he just loves to travel meeting all of his young friends. Get together with your unit and let me and VCO Huling know when you want him.

Coastie can be reached at mailto:artreich@westnet.com

IMPORTANT

Any one using Coastie must supply me with a copy of any photos or newspaper clippings for his scrapbook!

June 2000

As I have already reported, Coastie was invited to Washington, DC as part of Public Service Recognition Week on the National Mall.

While he was there, he met and made many new friends including Smokey the Bear, his old friends from the Customs Service, as well as many of his small friends. He got a chance to see the Custom service Helicopter and a high-speed patrol boat.

Commodore Reichling has received a thank you letter from Vice Admiral T. W. Josiah, Chief of Staff, United States Coast Guard, thanking him for his service in helping to tell the Coast Guard story. He also mentions the great popularity of Coastie and the many requests for his appearance at other events.

Just a reminder that if you want Coastie to come to your event you only need E-mail both me (artreich@westnet.com) and the Vice Commodore (billhuling.cgaux@snet.net) and if the date is open, he’s yours. Also remember that if I can’t come with Coastie you will need a van or truck to haul him.

Until we meet at your event keep SMILING. :>)
