Chartering and Plank Ceremony
Annadale Flotilla 14-06

Sunday August 10, 2003, a fine day for "laying the keel" of a new Flotilla.
The "Planking" Ceremony was conducted at Activities New York
.

A "Plank Owner" is someone who is a member of the first crew of the new "ship". They're entitled to a souvenir of the ship should she ever be decommissioned and scrapped. As an Auxiliarist, that "Plank Owner" gets a certificate instead.

New Auxiliarists - Proud to be American

On Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 12 Noon, Division 14 of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary saw the birth of a new flotilla on Staten Island – Flotilla 14-06. This rare event took place outside the Activities New York Building at Fort Wadsworth. A more appropriate setting does not exist. Where else could one find the American, Coast Guard and Auxiliary flags flying together?

Seven Auxiliarists along with eleven brand new members of the Auxiliary listened as Director of Auxiliary, CDR. John M. Felker USGC spoke of building a flotilla using the analogy of building a ship plank by plank. District Commodore Nicholas Kerigan of the Auxiliary’s 1st Southern Region swore in the new Flotilla Commander, Kathy Zak and Vice Flotilla Commander, Robert Foster as well as swearing in all of the new members.

Flotilla Commander Kathy Zak was presented with a “Plank” engraved with the members’ names by Cdr Felker. Master of Ceremonies Dante Laurino DSO-PS and Division 14 Captain Ray Zak gave the Auxiliarists certificates celebrating the chartering. CDR. Felker then bestowed a complete set of American and Coast Guard Auxiliary flags upon Flotilla 14-06. What wonderful mementos of this occasion. It was truly an honor !

Also attending the event were: CWO2 Chris Barthel USCG of Activities New York, VCO Charles Sferra, and RCO Activities New York South Stephen Ackerman. Pastor Gary Squire of Messiah Lutheran Church (the flotilla’s new home) also participated by leading the Invocation. Numerous Auxiliarists from the New York and New Jersey areas of the 1st Southern District attended.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Flotilla Commander Kathy Zak, on behalf of the members, presented embroidered hats commemorating the occasion to numerous individuals who assisted in the commissioning of the flotilla and luncheon reception which followed.

The founding members of 14-06 are: Raymond Zak DCP-14, Kathy Zak FC, Robert Foster VFC, Evelia Foster, Raymond Soper, Daniel Alavarces and William Metcalf. The newly sworn in Auxiliarists are: Donna Berg, Michael Berg, Paul Burset, James Emery, Kevin Frein, Frank Giasi, John Mazza, Vic Panzella, Charlene Skonieczny, Walter Skonieczny and James Slattery.

Take notice when you see the name of “Flotilla 14-06". These people are movers and shakers. They are growing already – two new members have been BQ’d, and two more are being prepared. They are anxious to get involved. You will see their names in the future. Wish them luck !
