"Boat Smart. Boat Safe. Wear It.", Division 14

This afternoon Division 14 Captain Raymond Zak, Vice Captain Robert Collie and Public Affairs Officer Kathy Zak spent some time with James P. Molinaro, Borough President of Staten Island. Mr. Molinaro presented a Proclamation which commended the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for their efforts in teaching the public the rules of boating safety.

Life jackets can be the determining factor between life and death in many boating safety accidents. Each year, on average, 700 people die in boating-related accidents - 8 out of every 10 victims were not wearing a life vest. According to Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, "Thousands of people would be alive today had they taken the simple precaution of wearing a life jacket when they went out on the water."

In an effort to combat these statistics, the National Safe Boating Council in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the National Administration of State Boating Law Administrators, launched the American Safe Boating Campaign on May 17. The Campaign
is designed to reach more than 70 million boaters around North America and communicates this year's life saving message:

"Boat Smart. Boat Safe. Wear It."
