The
Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel 823258, (Lady B) on an "Operation
Liberty Shield" patrol. The Facility and crew were
activated by CGACTNY upon the start of "Operation Iraqi
Freedom" and has been underway almost every day/night
helping to protect the vital infrastructure around NY Harbor.
Since
the ship and crew have been out all winter on MDA and Homeland
Security patrols, the crew has developed extensive experience
with the daily commercial traffic and activities in New
York Harbor. This experience enhances the situational awareness
of the crew for any abnormal activity in the harbor.
The
823258 is retired Coast Guard Point Class Patrol boat (CGC
Point Brown) restored to operational condition by the owner,
a LCDR, USCG (Ret) with assistance from members of Flotilla
14-01.
Since this vessel is over 65 feet and weighs 66 tons, the
normal BCQP standards are constantly being supplemented
by extensive on board training in line handling, firefighting,
damage control, small boat launching and recovery and MOB
procedures for both the Deck crew and the Bridge watch.
There also an Engineer of the Watch section to keep the
two Cummins VT12 900m's and the two Auxiliary generators
operating. The ship's galley provides excellent hot meals
while underway along with the never ending pots of coffee.
The
DCO and his aides were on board during a recent patrol.
They were given a grand tour of the AOR along with a visit
to CGACTNY's ATON section.
