On June 7th, Division 22 and the Coast Guard Station at Eatons Neck held their first Annual Coast Guard Boating Safety Expo. The goals of the expo were to educate the public about safety on the water, introduce the public to the local agencies providing for Homeland Security and to recruit people for public education courses, vessel safety checks and membership in either the Auxiliary, The Coast Guard or The Coast Guard Reserve. It was a wet and cloudy day but everyone had a great time. Eatons Neck Station Commander CWO2 Mark Davenport summed up the day pretty well when he spoke to those in attendance and said "A rainy day in a free country is better than any day in a country that is not free."

The event included 15 tables of displays including all types of PFD's, fire extinguishers, pumps, various types of lines, and other safety gear. In addition, tables were set up under tents for the public to sit down and learn how to read charts as well as become familiar with the local boating area. Our newest Flotilla 22-05 set up their own tent for recruiting purposes and displayed a jet ski with safety information. The Divisions public affairs booth was also set up. Helicopter tours were planned but canceled due to the weather conditions. The Coast Guard provided a BBQ to feed everyone all day as well as the night before for our setup party.

The highlights of the day included the arrival and tours of the Coast Guard Cutter RIDLEY, a presentation of a new Flotilla 22-05 to the Town of Oyster Bay by the District Commodore and the Station Commanding Officer. The event, which was the largest public affairs event in the Divisions history, was attended by about one-hundred Auxiliarists and Coast Guard personnel.

The Coast Guard built a "boat" and entered it in the "Anything that Floats" race (It did float - with a crew of three). A Blessing of the Fleet, Row Around the Bay, Kyak Race, New York State Learn to Fish Program, marine flea market and other activities rounded out the day.
