| Auxiliarists from Division 22 and Division 7 participated in an eight day, round the clock, Station Augmentation exercise at Eatons Neck from April 3rd to 10th. This exercise was in support of the Topoff 3 activities which took place in New London at the same time. All in all 112 Auxiliarists contributed about 3,500 hours between March 9th and April 10th in support of this operation. During the week of April 3 -10 alone, 240 Auxiliarists signed in the Station log book as they reported for duty and contributed over 1400 hours at the Station.
This Auxiliary Response Plan took about sixteen months to develop. The primary goal was to reinforce the concept of “total integration” at the Station level between the Auxiliary and Coast Guard. The program began with one day drills on weekends, and then moved to a weekday 28 hour drill to become familiar with night shift duties, accommodations and determine the level of Auxiliary availability for 24 hour shifts. The next drill was 72 hours, with goals of testing scheduling abilities, firming up assignments and further determining the minimum level of sustainability. The planning and drills culminated in this eight day exercise where the Auxiliary fully augmented Station Eatons Neck.
Auxiliarists replaced the Active Duty by filling billets for watch standing, ready boat crews, Officer Of the Day duties, cooking, security, fire response, grounds security, and they completed many maintenance tasks ranging from installing new doors to repairing the furnaces.
The Winter Operations Program was also put to use for both Divisions with seven Auxiliary Facilities participating and contributing 620 hours underway or bravo zero at the Station or Norwalk.
This exercise also revealed a number of new ways in which the Auxiliary could support a Coast Guard Station as we examined the jobs of the Active Duty while trying to implement this program.
